For most people, knee pain seems to creep up over time, often associated with some sort of repetitive movement or a quick increase in activity after a period of inactivity. In either scenario, the wellbeing of your knees and the muscles around them should be an integral part of your fitness routine. This becomes all that much more important as we get older.

What is it?

Plantar fasciitisPlantar fasciitis is inflammation of the fibrous band of tissue that spans the length of the foot connecting the heel to the toes. The plantar fascia acts as a shock absorber and supports the medial longitudinal arch of the foot. When excessive stress is applied to the plantar fascia through a specific event or cumulative trauma, an inflammatory responds may develop, causing a very painful condition with weight bearing activities. Chronic inflammation may eventually cause a heel spur that is visible via X-ray.

5 Holiday Health Tips

December and January are usually synonymous with an abundance of eating, a lack of exercise, and the flu. We want to encourage you to start this New Year on the right foot. The holidays are a time for celebration and family, not to put on weight and feeling ill. It’s almost as if we’ve come to accept that we are going to put on 10 pounds during each holiday season. (Believe it or not, weight gain and illness are linked. The worse the food you eat, the more likely you are to gain weight. This rich, sweet food also inflames your body; thereby restricting you immune system from fending off real threats: viruses. (But more on that in our next blog ☺)

Celebration doesn’t have to mean gluttonous eating, or deprivation for that matter. It’s time to bring the focus back to the purpose of the holiday. Enjoy your friends and family, the time off and the traditions of the holidays.
